“Do you love me?”

Those are the words that Jesus asked Peter THREE TIMES when He appeared to him after his death.  Peter had just denied that he even knew Jesus.

Peter was feeling like a total failure at the time.  He knew that he had let Jesus down, and now Jesus was looking him in the eye, asking him that very question.

How did Peter answer?

How would YOU answer if Jesus came to YOU, looked you in the eye, and asked you if you love Him?”

Maybe you would answer, “You know better than anyone, Lord.”  Who would really know better than Jesus if you really love Him?

Maybe you aren’t even sure yourself how to answer that.  If it were anyone else asking if you love Jesus, you would say, “of course” without reservation, but Jesus knows your real heart.  He knows your shortcomings and weaknesses.  When it’s Him asking, you may not even be sure how to answer.

Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.”

Sometimes we like to pick and choose which commands we will obey but Jesus doesn’t seem to leave that as an option.  He said, “If you love me, keep my commands.”

We may have a good reputation.  People may know us as a Christian.  There may be no one in the community that would question our devotion to God.  What really matters is if Christ knows us.  Reputations are worthless if He doesn’t know you.

In Revelation 3, Jesus spoke to the church in Sardis.  “You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead!”

It doesn’t matter what your reputation is or how well you are “known” for following Christ.  What matters is do you love Him?

How do you know?  Keep his commands.  (John 14:15)

John 14:15 isn’t a call to perfection.  No one will ever meet perfection outside of Jesus.  I think it should give us pause, however, when we think of our “pet” sins.  Maybe it’s a sin or two that NO ONE knows about except for you.  If others knew, it would ruin your “reputation.”

The question here is “Do you love Jesus?”  Do you love Him more than you love your secret sin?  Do you love Him enough to deal with it?

Have you given your “EVERYTHING” to Him.

Would you die for Him?

Do you love Him enough to deal with THAT SPECIAL sin?

Are you satisfied if everyone just thinks that you’re sold out?

Do you love Him?
