The god of FOOD!

May 30, 2012

I admit it.  I have a hard time with food.  I love food.  Hot-spicy chicken, ribs, wings…..  The list could go on and on.  The challenge with me is that I love it more than I should sometimes.  I actually like the stuffed feeling in my belly when I have conquered mass quantities of food.

The challenge for me is that I’m also a follower of Christ and nothing is supposed to come before me my relationship with God.  He actually bought me with a large price and my body is His temple.  I’m supposed to take good care of it since it’s not really mine to begin with.  Right?

A verse that has always bothered me a bit is in Philippians 3:19.  Paul is talking to the Philippians about people who are enemies of the cross, then he says it.  “Their destiny is destruction and their god is their stomach.”  OUCH!  I’ve been guilty of the socially acceptable sin of allowing my stomach to be my god.  It’s not ok in church world to have an affair, be a homosexual, or be unkind, but gluttony is generally accepted.  The truth is, it’s really not ok.

As for myself, I’ve let my stomach and my own desires call the shots, even when it conflicts with God’s instructions to me to take care of my body.  I’m working on that.

On top of the Philippians passage, I’ve also recently read Ezekiel 16:49.  I’ve always assumed that the sin of Sodom was pride.  That verse however, says: “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:(A) She and her daughters were arrogant,(B) overfed and unconcerned;(C) they did not help the poor and needy.

Did you get that?  Sodom was arrogant, OVERFED and unconcerned.  They didn’t help the poor.  How many of us are guilty of the same thing?  I’ve been overfed and not as concerned about the poor as I should be.

I want to challenge you, as I’m challenging myself, to consider taking better care of your body in your eating.  Does anyone else find this to be a challenge?  Remember, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  I’d love to hear from you.  Is anyone else convicted by this?

Have you read the book “The Happiness Diet”? There is an important, biologically necessary reason why traditional foods like pork chops make you feel good. And it is healthy for your brain’s structure and mental functioning when you eat pork chops, etc. according to the book. I did a review on my blog after reading the book. I’m glad I never fell for the low-fat hype.

I haven’t read that one but it sounds good. I tend to do better with the types of eating plans like Adkins & South Beach that allow meat, rather than the low fat ones also. Thanks for the comment! I’ll check out your review too, Pat!

Wow Eddie, I am struggling with this right now. It seems Like when we conquer one sin Satan likes to throw another one at us and pound us with it
